Project 3: Light
Designing a non-denominational chapel for Farmingdale State College is the aim of this project. It should be a serene place where individuals of all religions can pray and think, according to the college. They think this can be accomplished by using light creatively. In order to create a beautiful and useful room that is ideal for worship and introspection, the design will manipulate light.

Light Background Research
Located in Oak Park,Illinois,Unity Temple is a Unitarian Universalist church built by Frank LloydWright. It is a well-known example of Prairie architecture and is regarded as a modern design classic."Sun-acceptance in building means… wall-surfaces that eagerly take the light and play with it, break it up and render it harmless or drink it in until sunlight blends the building into place with the creation around it," according toWright, who held the beliefthat"...the sun is the great luminary of all life" (Wright 1954) (Wright inAitken,1998)

Light may enter the building as deeply as possible thanks to the higher windows on each side, which function as clearstories .TheTemple's large horizontal projected eaves on both sides shield these windows, offer shade, and affectthe quantity and quality of light entering the structure (e.g.,light reflection; glare protection).A glow is produced when light bounces up to the interior ceiling from the overhangs

Site Selection
I thought this was the perfect place for the church. First, we can maximize the natural light because there are no surrounding structures to obscure it. The location is also somewhat remote from the academic areas, which contributes to its tranquility.
